REVOLUTIONARY NEW RADAR ANTENNAS FOR NAVSTATION®

Simrad has launched sophisticated new Radar antennas for its new range of navigation products, NavStation®. The DX45 and DX60, designed and manufactured by Simrad, provide the NavStation range with superior Radar performance for improved safety at sea and enhanced navigation capabilities.

A key innovation of the DX antennas and NavStation is the provision of high definition dual range Radar. Created at the Simrad Design Centre for Navigation and dubbed multiVision, this new technology can take one close range Radar image and a longer range image and place them side by side on the NavStation screen in real time, essentially providing two fully independent Radars in one unit. This allows users to have a clear picture of what is going on around them whilst keeping a close eye on the bigger picture to aid early planning of navigation waypoints and routes.

The boat speed adaptive antenna rotation feature of the DX antennas enables the user to set a threshold for the automatic change of antenna rotation speed within the range of 20 – 50 rpm, according to the boat’s speed. If a boat accelerates the antenna will automatically adjust the speed of reception at the user defined threshold in order to increase Radar update on screen and provide safer navigation at speed.

The new super-sensitive receiver in the DX antennas gives a clearer picture by enabling the NavStation to utilise the entire Radar signal dynamics. This and the extremely clean transmitter modulation provides an even higher resolution picture enabling the clear separation of objects to present a less confusing screen and requiring less guesswork by the navigator.

Simrad’s NavStation range, through the use of the new Radar antennas and sophisticated software design provide greatly enhanced Radar functions including Radar overlay with Head Up or North Up mode, additionally, moving vessels are easily separated from fixed objects or land by using the NavStation’s inbuilt trail feature.

The DX Radar antennas for NavStation are available in two antenna sizes that both provide 4KW of power. The DX45 has a 1.5ft scanner and a 28nm range whilst the DX60 features a 2ft scanner with a 36nm range. Both antennas have been designed to provide a stylish new low-profile and aerodynamic look, which match modern boat design and reflects the sophisticated technology inside.

Installation and integration to NavStation is easy with no separate power box or software upgrading required. All in all, the Radomes are lighter, more attractive and easier to instal making them the perfect partner for the NavStation family.

Combined with the powerful new DX Radar antennas featuring multiVision, NavStation gives yachtsmen and motorboat owners the most powerful, flexible and functional navigation system on the market for leisure boaters today. For further information on the NavStation range and multiVision radar, visit

NAVSTATION® FROM SIMRAD

Designed as a Total Navigation Solution for power and sailboats, the NavStation range provides the choice of technically advanced SDGPS Chartplotter, Echosounder, Radar or combinations of all three from one base station, available with 3 screens sizes: CX34 (7”), CX44 (10.4”) and the CX54 (15”).

NavStation is a full Satellite Differential GPS chartplotter, utilising aspects of the tried and tested 34/44/54 series of Simrad combination products, but adding a wealth of extra physical and software based improvements. Once the user has the NavStation installed, a simple upgrade path is available to increased navigation capabilities: Just plug in a new Simrad designed NavStation DX antenna for full Radar functionality or an insert module and transducer for a powerful Simrad Echosounder. All connections to other Simrad products like VHF, Autopilots and other instruments are via the “plug and play” single SimNet cable network, so building a new complete boat system is exceptionally easy.

For owners who wish to install a NavStation with the full range of functions, the unit can be upgraded by the dealer and supplied in whatever configuration needed. The NavStation Series can also be configured as a Dual Station system with any combination of the three screen sizes: 7”, 10.4” or 15”.

The NavStation Series utilises a new sophisticated SunView display technology to increase viewability. This reduces glare and extends viewing angle, which in combination with stronger backlighting increases the quality of the image in strong sunlight and at night. This new technology makes the NavStation Series even more suitable for the often harsh marine environment.

Several new features have been implemented to make the NavStation a vital tool for navigation safety and efficiency for both sail and motorboats, including: Radar overlay with Head Up mode, Radar display with depth info and enhanced course vector. NavStation utilises new Simrad designed and manufactured Radar antennas that provide enhanced performance including speed adaptive antenna rotation and multiVision (dual range) presentation.*
.
NavStation is one of the first systems to utilise the new C-Map MAX chart system. These next generation electronic charts include many new features never-before-seen in electronic navigation and make use of larger capacity cartridges to provide greater chart coverage and greater functionality, including: Dynamic tidal flow on charts, anti grounding alarm, presentation of relevant geographical photos and drawings (landmarks, aids to navigation, bridges etc), land data with elevation, contours and road maps for major ports.

The New NavStation range is a culmination of Simrad’s dedication to providing safe, reliable and feature rich navigation products. Flexibility is a key factor with a NavStation system suitable for all boat types and sizes, whether purchased and installed as full combination units, or upgraded at a later date. NavStation is enhanced further by the use of C-Map MAX Charts making it a complete navigation tool capable of improving navigation performance, and therefore safety at sea.

SIMRAD 33 and 34 series

Solution and policy regarding condensation.

Condensation on the back of the front glass has
always been an issue for marine electronics
installed in the open, some more and some less.

After having introduced the 33 series Simrad learned
that the problem accelerated, mainly because more
and more products were installed outdoors, but
also because the front glass was made from real
glass in order to improve readability and
durability. This situation was not acceptable for
Simrad and many solutions have been tested
including total sealing, ventilation, heating, anti
dew treatments and many more, but all solutions
proved to have unacceptable downsides.

Bonding – the solution to eliminate
condensation.
After intensive research and testing Simrad have
decided on a solution called bonding. Bonding is
the latest and most advanced cure for
condensation. The idea is to glue the display and
the front glass together in an advanced process.
The result is a display solution which totally
eliminates condensation as there is no air between
the display and the front glass.
The new bonded display solution will be
introduced in the new navigation products for the
2005 season: CX/EQ/DS33 and CX/DS34.

Policy regarding existing products.
Simrad’s policy is to stand behind their products,
but regarding condensation it has been a long
struggle for all of us, as there was no real solution
available which would cure the problem. First
now, with the bonding technology, Simrad are able to
offer a reliable solution to the customer.

Upgrade with bonded display.
For 34 and 33 color products, which are installed
outdoors and where condensation is a problem, we
will offer a free of cost upgrade (excluding freight) with bonded
display.

Quin Service comment.
It is stated that the changeover is for 'condensation affected' units only. This is not a recall or an opportunity to get a free new front and screen. The downside will be when the current models develop a keypad or chart drawer problem we only need to replace the front cover. With the bonded units it will also require the screen to be changed which will be costly. however we are yet to determine the procedures for such failures.

If you have customers who satisfies these requirements
please advise in order for me to order sufficient replacements.

Upgrade process.
The details of the process are presently being
finalized by Simrad and we will inform you as soon as we
are ready with procedures and delivery times.

SIMRAD LAUNCHES ADVANCED AUTOPILOTS FOR THE REVOLUTIONARY VOLVO PENTA IPS

Using its vast experience in autopilot design and with the close cooperation of Volvo Penta, Simrad has developed intelligent auto steering via CAN for the stunning new Inboard Performance System (IPS). Launched at Schroders London Boat Show 2005, the new AC05 Autopilot Computer integrates with the highly successful AP 16/25/26/27 autopilots from Simrad to become the perfect partner for Volvo Penta’s latest generation in propulsion systems.

Simrad auto steering via CAN on the IPS allows the unique speed, handling and efficiency benefits of these high-tech propulsion systems to shine through. Benefits of the AC05 in conjunction with the AP 16/25/26/27 include direct rudder command via the CAN interface with no separate rudder feedback unit and pump. Simrad autopilots with the AC05 have already proven reliable and able to provide high acceleration and sharp turns for excellent handling performance during sea trials.

In addition to the numerous performance benefits, the CAN based design of the Simrad AC05 simplifies installation by reducing the number of cables and minimising the rudder set-up procedure. Several cables are required for traditional analogue auto steering set-up but the AC05 reduces this to just one. This results in reduced installation time and costs, with the added benefit of less holes drilled in the boat.

Simrad’s autopilot pedigree is second to none. This fact has been rewarded with no less than 38 highly regarded NMEA awards in the autopilot category. In fact, Simrad has won at least one NMEA award since they started over twenty years ago. With such a strong autopilot lineage, and a dedication to further development for sophisticated and revolutionary systems like IPS, Simrad further strengthens its position as a leader in the field of autosteering.

The 2004 NMEA awards, presented in October once again saw Simrad dominate the autopilot category. The AP25 was voted ‘Best Autopilot (recreational)’ in its first year on the market whilst the benchmark AP50 took the award for ‘Best Autopilot (commercial)’. Additionally, the ‘Best Compass, Electronic’ award was won by the new Simrad RC36 rate compass.

The Volvo Penta IPS will be ready for the 2005 season and Simrad autosteering via CAN will be available for integration at the same time. Simrad will be responsible for sales, marketing and servicing of the autopilot system whilst Volvo will distribute the interface to boat builders using the IPS.

Simrad EQ60

News Bulletin

Simrad EQ60 echo sounder discontinued.
Lack of critical components prevents repairs and support
In order to minimise the problems for
our dealers and customers, we have two
possible solutions.

1) Products still under warranty
For EQ60 BB units still under warranty we
will free of charge replace the unit with a
General Purpose Transceiver (GPT) set up
to correspond with the frequency of the old
EQ60. Note that Quin Marine must
provide a computer suitable for this system.
Price to be determined.

For the EQ60 with integrated display
monitor we will offer the same solution.
However, in this case we must remove the
PCT card in the EQ60 unit, and use the existing
computer to operatethe GPT.
The computer will already have a
suitable Ethernet card installed.

2) Products out of warranty
For all products out of warranty we offer
an exchange price to replace the EQ60BB
and EQ60 with integrated display monitor
with a new GPT. If required, Quin Marine will
provide the necessary computer.

NOTE: This offer ends 31 December 2005.

As previously reported, Simrad have experienced
problems obtaining important components for
the EQ60 echo sounder. The situation has now
become critical, and they feel that they are now
unable to support this product in a professional
and satisfying manner. For this reason, we regret
to announce that the EQ60 is now discontinued.
