IS12 Depth & Combi

Background

Simrad have been investigating some isolated instances of IS12 Combi and Depth installations in which the depth reading is intermittent.

Investigation

Investigation of returned units points towards a component that under some circumstances can become mechanically stressed, leading to a small drift in the frequency of the depth pulse. The nature of the fault and the variability of stress mean that it is difficult to isolate which units are most affected. The percentage of units affected is however relatively small. It is thought that the effect occurs mostly in units that are less than 12 months old.

Modification Details

A modification has been introduced that removes the stressing effect and ensures that the oscillator frequency is correct. The modification is a factory fit; it is not possible to modify units in the field.

Implementation

This modification has been introduced from serial numbers:
IS12 Combi’s from serial number WD2587
IS12 Depth’s from serial number WD2627

Swap Out

If you receive any reports of IS12 Combi or Depth units that are within warranty and display intermittent depth behavior, please ensure routine checks on cabling and connections are carried out first. Should the issue persist, the display head can be swapped out by advance exchange (subject to stock availability). This means we can provide the replacement unit at normal price and issue a credit upon return of faulty unit. A purchase order must be provided and the the returned instrument must not be physically damaged or have other defects outside of warranty conditions.

CX44/54 NavStations

Boot sector update.

Simrad have, in the production, introduced a new boot sector software version 5.02. The reason for this update is that they have seen that, with a given DataCard present in one of the drawers, the unit would not start up. The new boot sector includes a small modification that will ensure correct startup with all DataCards

New deliveries
All CX44 and CX54 supplied after 17 May will include the new boot sector.

Existing CX44 and CX54
The chance of running into the above problem is very small, but if a unit with a DataCard in one of the drawers ceases to start up, simply remove the DataCard and switch on the unit.
Once the unit is on you can safely insert and use the DataCard.

Other products.
CP31, CX33, EQ33/44/54 and DS units are not subject to the issue with the DataCards, and will therefore gradually change to boot sector 5.02.

NOTE: Main unit and dual station must have identical mainsoftware version whereas the boot sector can be either 5.01 or 5.02.

Where the operation of the unit is troublesome to some users. Quin Marine will install the new software including return freight for AU$82.50 (exc insurance). This offer valid until 1st September 2006 and is limited to Australia only.

regards Frank.

FU25 and FU50 Steering Levers

Environmental Problems

Simrad have over a long period of time experienced problems with water ingress on these units. Several attempts have been made to cure the problem without success. The only way to solve the problem is a redesign, which necessarily will take time.
Simrad have therefore decided to downgrade the degree of protection on these two products from IP56 (exposed) to IP22 (protected).
This means that FU25 and FU50 in their current version no longer are suitable for outdoor (exposed) operation.

Units shipped as of this date are no longer warranted against water damage.
Customers who have already bought the units for outdoor use shall be offered a full refund of their purchase.

If the product fails due to water entry while it is still under warranty a full refund of the purchase price will be made available and normal warranty requirements will apply such as proof of purchase.
